You know that Kenny Roger’s baseball song, The Greatest? It’s one of Christian’s favorite songs. He really loves it, as in, I listened to it three times in a row last night in the car on our way home. It always gives me chill bumps and makes my eyes well-up. Turns out, I was supposed to laugh, not cry. Thanks to Scott, I now know the truth.
See, I always thought the little boy was really playing in a game, and the whole time you think he’s the batter, but in the end you realize he’s really the pitcher. Christian thought the same thing. Scott explained that the little boy was really just throwing the ball up in the air, swinging the bat, and imagining the whole game and crowd cheering business. He struck himself out.
Christian and I were devastated. How did we miss it? Did everyone know this? After checking around, we realized we were the only ones with that interpretation of such a well-loved song. It was a little sad. After a little discussion, we decided who cares! We like our way better, and we are sticking with it, so there!
Christian pitched the first three innings today for the Diamondbacks on opening day of Ocean Springs Little League. He did an awesome job despite a little side-armed craziness here and there, and they won the game 8 to 7.
So, Kenny, no offense or anything, Christian and I are going to go with our own take of your song. He is the greatest, and that is a fact, but even I didn’t know he could pitch like that!
